What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychiatrists and psychologists work closely together. Both disciplines work with people’s emotions, feelings and behaviours. The biggest difference is that a psychiatrist prescribes medication but a psychologist does not. This is due to a psychiatrist having specialist medical training in the understanding of the causes of physical and behavioural illnesses and how to best to treat them. Not all psychologists go on to work with psychiatric illness and behavioural difficulties.
